What is the Diploma?
QCA, the DCSF and the Skills for Business Network are working together to develop the Diploma, which is a new qualification to recognise achievement at ages 14 to 19. It will combine practical skill development with theoretical and technical understanding and knowledge.
What is it for?
The Diploma will:
- open up choices for young people
- offer different ways of learning and a route into higher education or employment
- provide credible, industry-verified applied learning, linked to interdependent general learning, with real opportunities to practise skills.
How will the Diploma be structured?
The Diploma will have three components:
- principal learning – students develop knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes relevant to a sector (or sectors) and are given opportunities to apply these to work roles or situations and realistic contexts
- additional/specialist learning – students choose from a range of options endorsed by employers
- generic learning – students develop and apply the skills and knowledge necessary for learning, employment and personal development.
What can Employers do to support the Diploma?
The Diploma has been developed by employers and has a strong focus on links with the world of work. Employer support will be essential in all aspects of the Diploma to ensure that young people get the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.
Key areas employers can support are:
Work Experience – The Diploma will include a minimum of ten days work experience at each level. This Work Experience will be most relevant and useful for both students and employers if it is in the industry area that the student is studying.
Work Related Learning – In every area of the Diploma teachers will require activities and materials to relate their teaching to the worlds of work. Employers can get involved through a variety of ways – supporting the development of classroom materials for teachers to use, hosting students visits at the workplace, giving talks to students in school or being involved in one of the Diploma strategy groups.
