Ealing

- 11th largest borough in London. Ealing’s population is ethnically diverse, it is the 3rd most diverse borough in London after Tower Hamlets and Hackney.
- Has 12 Secondary, 6 Special and 65 Primary Schools . Apart from English, children in Ealing schools speak more than 100 languages. 72% of students are from a minority ethnic background.
- Birthplace of Fred Perry (Sportsman) Dusty Springfield (Singer) and home of the Ealing studios, the oldest in the world. St Trinian’s and Star Wars were filmed here.
- A commuter paradise, known as “Queen of the suburbs” since 1904. The borough is a transport hub for West London and has good access to central London.
- Covers 21 square miles of West London, bordering Hillingdon, Hammersmith, Fulham, Brent, Harrow and Hounslow. There are six districts within the borough: Ealing, Hanwell, Acton, Southall, Perivale and Northolt.
- 16% of areas in Ealing are within the top 20 most deprived in England; 5% are within the most deprived.
Hillingdon:
- 2nd largest borough in London.
- Has 18 Secondary, 6 Special and 52 Primary Schools. 60% of students are White British, 14% Indian and 5% Black African. Other White Backgrounds make up 4%, with 2.5% from Pakistani and 2% Black Caribbean. 27%+ of students don’t have English as their first language.
- Attainment at 16: After Key Stage 4 (years 10 -11), students chose to either continue in education or take up employment. This decision has significant bearings on future economic well-being. The percentage of young people in Hillingdon who go into HE is above the national average, but low compared to other London authorities.
- 14 miles from central London, where town and country meet: 800 acres woodland, country parks, rivers and the Grand Union Canal. Heathrow is within the boundaries. Historic landmarks include medieval churches, and an underground operations room for the Battle of Britain. Uxbridge shopping centre is one of London’s top-ten.
- Covers 42 square miles of West London, bordering Surrey, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the London Boroughs of Harrow, Ealing and Hounslow.
- Throughout Hillingdon are small pockets of significant disadvantage. There are striking variations within Borough. South, particularly belt bordered to the south by M4, and to north by Uxbridge Road, is more deprived than the north, on almost all indicators of deprivation. Residents of Hillingdon are more likely to be affected by deprivation related to income, employment and barriers to housing and services.
